what's the point?

I am hereby lobbying for the expression, "Well isn't that just a kick in the pants?" to be officially changed to, "Well isn't that just a javelin in the foot?"

Much more expressive don't you think? The elements of pain and surprise invoked by this expression really drive home the point so much better.

Poor lady. Do you think she saw it comming? What was removal like? Did the javelin stick out of the ambulence? Have I nothing better to blog about?

um, I'm such a nerd...but check me out anyway

So I've been frequenting Ken Jennings' blog for about a month now. (I was a total nerd crazy person about following him when he was on his Jeopardy winning streak). I'm reading his book, Brainiac too. I really like him a lot. He has a really smart, funny, and interesting style of writing. He's my favorite "celebrinerd" as Time magazine dubbed him.

Back to me. So, I also signed up for this trivia email he sends out every Tuesday. It's a contest where he asks seven trivia questions and you send in your answers. He asks that you only send in the answers that you truly know, but to foil the sinister plans of the trivia-cheaters, he makes #7 a really tough-to-Google one. Until last week I always just saw how many I would get- only two or three answers usually- and never a Question 7, without sending in my answers. Then there was a Question 7 that I knew right away, plus three others. I was so psyched that I knew it that I sent my answers in. It turns out it was pretty easy because EVERYONE else knew it too. But I'm not last on the scoreboard so I thought I'd share. Click here, (*this link no longer works because I plummeted to nonexistent in the rankings) and scroll down to rank 191- yeah, keep scrolling, now look down a few names... woohoo! Like I said...I'm not last. Alas, this week- I knew nada. *sigh* I had my trivia moment in the sun.

Here's the Question 7 for all of my loyal readers to take a stab at:
7. Finally, a Question Seven for music fans. What do these albums have in common? Introducing the Beau Brummels, the Beau Brummels. Chopper City in the Ghetto, BG. Diamond Dogs, David Bowie. If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, the Mamas and the Papas. Party, Iggy Pop. Spellbound, Paula Abdul. This Year's Model, Elvis Costello.

no, not male dancers from In Living Color

I got to escape last night and see a movie with Laura. We decided to see Flyboys. It was very good- beautiful cinematography, interesting true story, and handsome young pilots. The dogfight scenes were kind of confusing. Many times you saw just a goggle clad face in a cockpit, either killing or being killed, and it was difficult to determine which guy it was until they landed...or didn't. I had no idea that many U.S. men volunteered to go over to France to learn to fly and aide the Allied cause before the U.S. officially became involved in WWI (wasn't in any of the textbooks I taught). The airplane had really just been invented, and it was such a novelty that the movie included a conversation about what kind of purpose airplanes might serve after the war, if any.

I thought the film was cast really well- no big name stars, but a great ensemble. Jean Reno is probably the most recognizable ( I was right Laura, he was the guy in The Professional). He played the French captain and was excellent. The main character was played by James Franco, who I figured out was the rich "friend" in Spiderman and he was in Never Been Kissed. He was great, kind of understated, totally charismatic...okay he was hot! *Ahem,* anyway, good flick- I'd recommend it.

na na na na na na na na...

Batjack!!!

He looks so old in this picture, doesn't he?
This ensemble is thanks to Aunti Kari.
And my favorite part:

The cape!!!!

And since we're on the Batman theme, I found these awesome excerpts from the Batman TV show of Batman lecturing Robin.

Robin: "You can't get away from Batman that easy!"
Batman: "Easily."
Robin: "Easily."
Batman: "Good grammar is essential, Robin."
Robin: "Thank you."
Batman: "You're welcome."

dmb last night

It was a very good show, but on the mellow, heavy on the jam side for the majority of the songs. They expanded their horn section with members of P Funk which sounded really cool. We had a total Bro-mance in front of us. These frat guys couldn't keep their hands off eachother in an "I love you man!!!!" NO....I REALLY love you man." kind of way. Favorite movie quote from Tom about them: I think they're wearing "sex panther cologne... with real bits of panther...so you know it's good."(Anchorman)

Here's the set list:

Pantala Naga Pampa *
Rapunzel *
Everyday *
Proudest Monkey *
Satellite *
Bartender *
Hunger For The Great Light *
Louisiana Bayou *
Cant Stop
Dream Girl *
The Idea Of You *
So Much To Say *+

see jen, i take requests

Jennifer asked me to blog about this Blogthings quiz that would tell me the pattern of my brain. I took the test, and this was my result:

Your Brain's Pattern

Structured and organized, you have a knack for thinking clearly.
You are very logical - and you don't let your thoughts get polluted with emotions.
And while your thoughts are pretty serious, they're anything from boring.
It's minds like yours that have built the great cities of the world!
Clearly, it doesn't work.

the roo is two

We had Roo's birthday party yesterday. We got him a train table becuase it looks as though, just as the girls fell prey to the Disney Princess juggernaut, so has the boy to Thomas the Tank Engine (or "choo-choo" as he refers to it). He seemed to like it:

The cake was awesome. However, the little tank engine pictured below that was supposed to run 'round the track, was derailed by overlapping frosting.

I neither have the time nor the energy to explain the ordeal that ensued when I decided to have train shaped Jell-0 jigglers at this party. Suffice it to say that Tom almost physically harmed several Hobby Lobby employees and I had to purchase 100 cookie cutters (of which 8 were missing!)from Jo-Ann Fabrics in order to procure the one aforementioned train. But, thanks to Laura's culinary jiggler prowess, it all worked out. This is the result:

And here's Roo just being cute:

el hombre de los moleculos

We watched a rerun of SNL last week with Conan as host. I know I watched it when it originally aired but I think I must have fallen asleep before this skit, because it was new to me.

I can't get the theme song and catchphrase out of my brain. I just keep cracking up about it. I showed it to the girls and now they're doing it too. Something will happen like spilled milk or something and one of us will say, "This looks like a job for Moleculo." The the rest of us shout "THE MOLECULAR MAN!" (Which, of course, is best said while putting one's hands on one's hips and puffing out one's chest)

E keeps quoting different parts from it. I love that she quotes stuff like me. There's this one quote she does from Elf when Will Ferrell steps into the mail room and says. "This is just like Santa's workshop...except it smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me." I just dig that she finds the humor in that, and her delivery is great.

I'm glad my kids are funny. E starts an Improv class at the park district this week. I think that should be cool.

I have no relevant sentence with which to end this post.

Here are several random thoughts:
*I was impressed that I correctly answered yesterday's final Jeopardy which was the word "sedition."
*We watched Akeela and the Bee tonight. I really like that movie and I love that I can watch it with E.
*Hobby Lobby lied to me and said they had a choo choo train cookie cutter and would hold one at the service desk, when in fact they had no such cutter...more like Liar Lobby!
*Brad Pitt said that he would not marry Angelina until marriage rights are equal in the U.S. Is that just really a backhanded way of saying "I'll marry HER when hell freezes over?"
*If you are reading this before 9/11 check out my cute panda post on webshots here. If it's after 9/11, um, check out my 9/11 post.
* twenty-something people are going to be in my house in 15 hours and I am ill prepared.

attack of the creepy tomatoes...um zucchini?

Kari sends me an email consisting of one word:weird
and this link

Check it out. I love the quote "They might even encourage children to eat their vegetables."

Yeah...or cause them to run screaming from the table and plague them with freakish veggie nightmares for the rest of their lives. Okay, I mean sure I totally understand why you would want your cucumber to look like an ear of corn....WHAT?!? And did you see the ones that are just "caps," so you can have a completely normal vegetable...until you get to its bizarre and grotesque HEAD!!! No, no I say.

And why is it that I have no problem eating meat, and can put the process of what happens to innocent animals out of my mind but think that these things are cruel to vegetables?

That's how messed up I am.

i left my harp in sam clam's disco

My lack of posts is due to my whirlwind solo trip to San Francisco for Kari and Kevin's anniversary and my birthday. (I just really wanted to type the word whirlwind) It was a really nice time, I love visiting them. I missed my family but it was nice to not have to chase and be "responsible" for a few days.

They had a party at this very cool tapas restaurant Friday night. Then we went up to the bar on the roof where the most amusing part was the fact that it was 60 degrees minimum, we were all wearing jackets and so many people were shivering, jockeying for positions near heat lamps, and complaining about how cold it was. California people are a little wimpy about the weather. It was a very clear night, with a beautiful view. Then we went to The Mint which is a karaoke bar, hoping Kevin would get to sing Ziggy Stardust, but there were way too many people on the list. We had to be happy with singing and dancing along with everyone else to the likes of "99 Red Balloons," "Livin' on a Prayer" and Journey's "Separate Ways" sung by other patrons with various degrees of singing prowess.

Then we stayed up way too late eating frozen pizzas we got on the way home because the tapas we ate just were not cutting it. I took no pictures that night but I can share with you this image of the amazing omelet Kevin made the next morning.

Kari and I walked to Haight Street for Kevin's anniversary present and hippie t-shirts for my kids. As we walked, I saw these amazing purple petals all over the sidewalk. The picture does not do the color justice.

They were from this tree. Isn't it beautiful?

Then we had Chinese food and watched half of season two of Entourage. Here's a picture of the guy I slept with both nights. His name's Taz, and I swear he's more like a puppy than a cat.

Here's Magic, who is all cat, Kari, and me (one year older all of a sudden) after she and Kevin presented me with a Hostess cupcake with candle and sang to me.

Then we had a great breakfast at Magnolias. Aren't they cute?

Then I had to go to the airport. Man that was a fast trip. But it's nice to be home.

Oh, and I must add that another highlight of the trip was definitely flying first class thanks to Tom's FF miles. It was a steady stream of hot towels, roasted almonds, delicious turkey sandwiches, warm chocolate chip cookies, tea, and a chardonnay glass they kept refilling. Thanks Tom!

Now I'm going to do laundry...*sigh.* Back to reality.
